2 Complementation of PPs
quickinfo

Four types of adpositions are distinguished, depending on the position, presence and category of the complement.

  • Adpositions taking a complement on the right: prepositions
  • Adpositions taking a complement on the left: postpositions
  • Adpositions occurring in tandem, one preceding and one following the complement: circumpositions
  • Adpositions occurring without complement: bare (intransitive) adpositions.

Two examples of PPs are given below:

1
Hie stuud ‘n bitje uut der Siede.
he stood a bit out the side
He stood a bit on the side.

Here the adposition uut ‘out’ takes a complement to its right, so the adposition is effectively a preposition. Consider next the following example:

2
Die Weertsmon smeet dän Bedeler [tou sin Piezel] uut.
the landlord threw the begaar to his tavern out
The landlord threw the beggar out of his tavern.

Here the adposition uut ‘out’ takes a complement on its left, so the adposition is effectively a postposition.
