The influence of word frequency on vowel reduction
quickinfo

The unstressed vowels in highly frequent words are more likely to undergo reduction than those in words of low frequency. The influence of frequency has been widely acknowledged. Recently, Geerts (2008:169) has provided empirical evidence for this claim from the Corpus Gesproken Nederlands (CGN): according to him, speakers are more likely to show reduction in generally frequent words and in words involving a speaker’s daily occupation.
