V2s may be found as the complement to predicates of saying and attitudinal predicates (thinking and expressing an opinion), such as:

  • antwurdzje answer, fertelle tell, meidiele report, oantsjutte indicate, oanjaan declare, sizze say
  • bedoele mean, fêststelle state, fine find, leauwe believe, miene express an opinion, ornearje claim, sjen see, observe, tinke think

These predicates are usually verbs, but it may also include nouns such as boadskip message and brief letter. Two examples are given below:

1
a. Gjinien antwurde, hy soe it wol dwaan
he answered he should it DcP do
Nobody answered he was going to do it
b. Se stjoerden in brief nei de âlde lju, hja soene oer in moanne trouwe
they sent a letter to the old folk they should over a month marry
They sent a letter to their parents, they were going to marry in a month

If the matrix clause must be a clause of saying or attitude, then the V2 must necessarily represent what is said, thought or felt. The V2s are syntactically integrated, as is witnessed by the fact that a pronoun inside a V2 can be bound outside it. Hence they can be classified as INCV2s.
