Irrealis present perfect and past perfect
quickinfo

The past tense of the irrealis refers to a hypothetical situation which was possible in the past, but which is no longer possible in the present. It can be expressed in two ways. Either the past perfect of the main verb is used, or the past tense of the auxiliary sille shall is used in tandem with the perfect tense of the infinitive of the main verb.

If a hypothetical situation, which was possible in the past, is not possible in the present anymore, we are dealing with an irrealis conditional in the past tense. This can be morphologically expressed in two ways. First: it can be expressed by the morphology of the past perfect of the main verb, as in the example below:

1
At se my trainer fan Cambuur makke hiene, hie ik fuort Barto opsteld
if they me trainer of Cambuur made had had I directly Barto selected
If they had made me trainer of Cambuur, I would immediately have selected Barto for the lineup

Second, it can be expressed by the past tense of the auxiliary sille shall in tandem with the perfect tense of the infinitive of the main verb, as in (2):

2
At se my trainer fan Cambuur makke ha soene, soe ik fuort Barto opsteld ha
if they me trainer of Cambuur made have would would I directly Barto selected have
If they had made me trainer of Cambuur, I would immediately have selected Barto for the lineup

Furthermore, it is possible to combine these two ways of expressing the irrealis present in a conditional construction:

3
a. At se my trainer fan Cambuur makke hiene, soe ik fuort Barto opsteld ha
if they me trainer of Cambuur made have would I directly Barto selected have
If they had made me trainer of Cambuur, I would immediately have selected Barto for the lineup
b. At se my trainer fan Cambuur makke ha soene, hie ik fuort Barto opsteld
if they me trainer of Cambuur made have would had I directly Barto selected
If they had made me trainer of Cambuur, I would immediately have selected Barto for the lineup
