Deverbal adjectives
quickinfo

Deverbal adjectives are adjectives which are morphologically related to a verb. An example is the adjective afhanklikdependent, which is morphologically related to the verb afhang vandepend on. Deverbal adjectives behave like ordinary adjectives with respect to the position of their complement PP, except when they are prefixed, for example, with in-in-.

Deverbal adjectives allow referential NPs on either side of the subject:

Example 1

Daarvan is sy afhanklik.
R.that is she dependent
She is dependent on that.
Example 2

Sy is afhanklik daarvan.
she is dependent R.of
She is dependent on that,

PPs with a quantified NP are placed on the left, which is shown in the examples below:

Example 3

omdat sy van geen mens afhanklik wil wees nie
because she of no person dependent wants.to be not
because she doesn't want to be dependent on anyone
Example 4

?omdat sy afhanklik van geen mens wil wees nie
because she dependent of no person wants.to be not
because she doesn't want to be dependent on anyone

Furthermore, in case the deverbal adjective is prefixed with on-on-, it has a preference for placement on the right, even in the case of quantifiers:

Example 5

Onafhanklik van mekaar het hulle daardie probleem opgelos.
independent of each.other have they that problem solved
Independent of each other they solved that problem.
Example 6

?Van mekaar onafhanklik het hulle daardie probleem opgelos.
of each.other independent have they that problem solved
Independent of each other they solved that problem.
Example 7

Onafhanklik van wie ook al het hulle daardie probleem opgelos.
indepent of whoever they solved that problem
Independent of whoever they solved that problem.
Example 8

*Van wie ook al onafhanklik het hulle daardie probleem opgelos.
of whoever independent have they that problem solved.
Independent of whoever they solved that problem.
Example 9

Onafhanklik van alle regeringsinstansie het hulle daardie probleem opgelos.
independent of all government.bodies have they that problem solved
Independent of all government bodies they solved that problem.
Example 10
