Segmental restrictions on stress placement

Certain segments and segmental combinations do not carry stress or affect stress placement in other ways. In the strongest sense this is the case for schwa, which never receives stress, but usually occurs directly after the stressed syllable (see Schwa in post-tonic syllables). In addition to schwa, some more segmental combinations (high vowels plus homorganic glides) tend to avoid stress, at least in specific positions within the word.
