Infinitival with complementiser and object gap
quickinfo

The adjective is followed by an infinitival clause with an object gap. An example is given below:

Example 1

Hja is te jong om út te noegjen foar it bungafeest
she is too young for out to invite for the bunga.party
She is too young to be invited to the bungaparty

The argument of which the adjective is predicated can also be coreferential with a gap in the infinitival clause that occurs in the position of direct object or prepositional complement:

Example 2

a. Hja is te jong om út te noegjen foar it bungafeest
she is too young for out to invite for the bunga.party
She is too young to be invited to the bungaparty
b. Hja is te jong om in relaasje mei te hawwen
she is too young for a relation with to have
She is too young to have a relationship with

The infinitival clause may be preposed:

Example 3

a. Om út te noegjen foar it bungafeest is hja te jong
for out to invite for the bunga.party is she too young
She is too young to be invited to the bungaparty
b. Om in relaasje mei te hawwen is hja te jong
for a relation to have is she too young
She is too young to have a relationship with

The degree phrase as a whole may be preposed:

Example 4

a. Te jong om út te noegjen foar it bungafeest is hja net
too young for out to invite for the bunga.party is she not
She is not too young to be invited to the bungaparty
b. Te jong om in relaasje mei te hawwen is hja net
too young for a relation with to have is she not
She is not too young to have a relationship with

The embedded clause cannot have the form of an Imperativus-pro-Participio, although the examples improve considerably in case the object gap is filled with a pronoun. This is shown in the examples below:

Example 5

a. *Hja is te jong en noegje út foar it bungafeest
she is too young and invite out for the bunga.party
She is too young to be invited to the bungaparty
b. *Hja is te jong en haw in relaasje mei
she is too young and have a relation with
She is too young to have a relationship with
c. Hja is te jong en noegje har út foar it bungafeest
she is too young and invite her out for the bunga.party
She is too young to be invited to the bungaparty
d. ?Hja is te jong en haw in relaasje mei har
she is too young and have a relation with her
She is too young to have a relationship with
